The Biomethane Community
Buddy Projects
BIOMETHAVERSE has joined forces with its ‘buddy’ projects, the other three biomethane-dedicated projects funded under the same call and determined to make a difference in speeding up and streamilining biomethane production in Europe to make it cheaper and faster and market-ready.
Meet our buddies:
HYFUELUP looks at developing an advanced technology for biomethane production using gasification and methanation by deploying a first of its kind value chain for biomethane production using low grade biomass residues and sludge digestate from AD plants. The project’s main demonstator site will be the Tondela Viseu (Portugal) plant.
METHAREN sets out to demonstrate an innovative concept to efficiently convert electricity into gas demonstrate via a cost-effective, innovative, more sustainable and circular biomethane production system enabling renewable energy sources intermittency management. The project’s demonstator site will be the ACEA Waste Treament plant in Pinerolo (Italy).
SEMPRE-BIO aims at securing domestic production of cost-effective biomethane by proposing effective biomethane production solutions and pathways. Specifically, it will set up three European biomethane innovation ecosystems based in Adinkerke (Belgium), Baix Llobregat (Spain) and Bourges (France), which are representative of the different baseline situations for biomethane production across Europe.

Biomethane Industrial Partnership - BIP
BIOMETHAVERSE’s project coordinator (ISINNOVA), the scientific coordinator (European Biogas Association – EBA) and Biogas Lagada (project partner in Greece) are part of the Biomethane Industrial Partnership – BIP and will join forces with other members to fast-track biomethane production and consumption in the EU.
The BIP is an industrial partnership in which policy makers, industry and other stakeholders team up with the goal to support the achievement of the target of 35 billion cubic metres annual production and use of sustainable biomethane by 2030, and to create the preconditions for a further ramp-up of its potential towards 2050.
The work of the Biomethane Industrial Partnership is structured in five Task Forces in which members collaborate at expert level on specific topics on the basis of the partnership’s Work Programme. Task Forces work on specific pre-defined actions and create deliverables that help to achieve the goal of the partnership.
BIOMETHAVERSE will contribute to Task Force 5, dealing with research, development and innovation scenarios.
BIOMETHAVERSE’s innovation pathways to diversify the production base for biomethane will definitely inspire the project’s contribution in identifying and assessing innovative thermochemical, biochemical and biological technologies for biomethane production and exploring potential improvements in anaerobic digestion and methanation technologies.

The European Biomethane & Biogas Community
Under the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency’s (CINEA) umbrella is a thriving community working towards adancing the European Green Deal through research and innovation projects, as well as coordination and support intiatives focused on biomethane and biogases.
Beyond specialized research and services, the European biogas and biomethane community actively promotes collaboration to create synergies around the challenges and opportunities of biomethane and biogases, united by the shared goal of achieving climate neutrality.
Along with BIOMETHAVERSE’s buddy projects (HYFUELUP – METHAREN – SEMPRE-BIO) other initiatives on the topic include:
CARBONNeutralLNG – Truly Carbon Neutral electricity enhanced Synthesis of Liquefied Natural Gas from biomass
FlexSNG – Flexible Production of Synthetic Natural Gas and Biochar via Gasification of Biomass and Waste Feedstocks
PRODIGIO – Developing early-warning systems for improved microalgae production and anaerobic digestion
GREENMeUp – Enhancing the uptake of biomethane in Europe
BIOSTAR2C – Dissolving the barriers to biomethane introduction to gas networks and vehicles
ALFA – Upscaling the market uptake of renewable energy by unlocking the biogas potential of livestock farming
ETIP-B2022-2025 – European technology and innovation platform bioenergy – support of renewable fuels and advanced bioenergy stakeholders 2022-2025
Photo2Fuel – Developing a breakthrough technology that converts CO2 into useful fuels and chemicals by means of non-photosynthetic microorganisms and organic materials, using only sunlight as an energy source.
