Stable Performance and High Biomethane Quality in the Swedish TBR Pilot

The Swedish Trickle Bed Reactor pilot continues to deliver promising results at the More Biogas site in Kalmar. By adding renewable hydrogen to biogas, the process produces high-quality biomethane while maintaining stable operation across different gas flow rates, an important step towards scalable biological methanation.

In recent weeks, the pilot has been tested at biogas flow rates ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 Nm³/h, with stable performance throughout the entire range. The results indicate that the microbial community can adapt to changing operating conditions without compromising the process.

Gas quality has been equally encouraging. Across the tested range, the product gas contained 90–97% methane, 1–5% carbon dioxide and 0–5% residual hydrogen. The reactor therefore consistently achieved high biomethane concentrations and efficient conversion, even as the biogas flow varied.

The testing activities have also generated important operational lessons. Variations in pressure from the connected facility initially affected the accuracy of the gas analyses, but the issue has now been resolved, providing a more reliable measurement dataset for the next phase.

Fresh digestate is added once a week as a simple nutrient solution. This low-maintenance approach meets the microbial community’s needs without synthetic supplements and contributes to stable operation.

The next phase will focus on further process optimisation and progressively increasing gas flows, building additional evidence for scalable Power-to-Gas solutions.
