Greek ETM Demo: moving from commissioning to full operation
The Greek Ex-Situ Thermochemical Catalytic Methanation pilot at Biogas Lagadas has completed commissioning and preliminary trials and has now moved into full operation.
All three fixed-bed methanation reactors, the pre-treatment train and the balance-of-plant equipment have been installed within the containerised unit. The previously pending tailor-made secondary components have also been received and fitted, while the required civil and electromechanical work at the demonstration site has been completed.
Ahead of integration with the existing Biogas Lagadas plant, the project team carried out a comprehensive series of pre-commissioning checks. These covered hydrogen safety, pressure, ventilation, gas detection and emergency shutdown procedures. Factory and Site Acceptance Tests were also successfully completed.
With preliminary trials concluded, the demonstration has now entered its full operational campaign. During this phase, the team will collect validated performance data on biomethane quality, catalyst stability and energy efficiency and monitor progress towards the pilot’s operating-hour and production targets.
The results will feed directly into the project’s technical, sustainability and techno-economic assessments, as well as the BIOMETHAVERSE Biomethane Planning Decision Guide. This evidence will help evaluate the potential for wider replication of thermochemical methanation at other biogas plants in Greece and across Europe.
