Italian Demo Units fully installed and moving into operation
All units at the Italian demonstration site are now fully installed and operational. Most notably, the container hosting the Ex-Situ Biological Methanation and co-digestion systems has been completely set up, equipped and painted.
Alongside these demo-scale activities, maintenance and revamping work on the second of the two full-scale industrial digesters has been successfully completed. The unit is currently moving through its commissioning and start-up phase.
This second digester will play a crucial role in BIOMETHAVERSE’s Italian research activities. It will serve as the process control and provide a reliable baseline against which the performance and effects of sludge ozonolysis can be assessed. The ozonolysis treatment will be applied exclusively to the material feeding the first digester, enabling a direct comparison between the two units.
Further optimisation of the ozonolysis plant’s hydraulic circuit was also carried out during the summer, achieving an ozone-transfer efficiency of nearly 100%. Continuous operation resumed in early September, opening the way for a more reliable evaluation of the treatment’s effects on sewage sludge digestion, biogas production and the overall performance of the integrated system.
These developments mark an important step towards generating the operational data needed to assess the technical and environmental potential of the Italian demonstration pathway.
