The Ukrainian biomethane industry has moved from conceptual foundations to real results in recent years. After the adoption of the law on the development of biomethane production in 2021, the first plants appeared, and by the end of 2024, Ukraine produced the first million cubic meters of biomethane. Today, 6 plants with a total annual capacity of over 100 million m3 of biomethane are operating in the country. Also, 7 biomethane plants with a total capacity of about 40 million m3/year are planned to be launched in 2026-2028.
The strategic goal is export to the EU, and the first steps have already been taken. According to ExPro Consulting, Ukrainian private companies exported over 11.2 million m3 of gaseous biomethane in 2025. In addition, two Ukrainian companies exported about 5,900 tons of liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) in 2025.
However, the full opening of the EU market requires regulatory changes. The Memorandum on Strategic Partnership between Ukraine and the EU in biomethane, hydrogen and other synthetic gases has already been signed. Since the Ukrainian gas grid is physically connected with the European one, it should be considered as part of the single EU gas system. Therefore, Ukrainian biomethane certified under recognized schemes should be taken into account for achieving the renewable targets of the Member States on an equal footing with biomethane from the EU.
The period 2025–2026 is decisive in the formation of the legislative framework and connection to the EU Union Database (UDB).
